Collecting is good! Collecting and decorating is very good! So for all of you who love to decorate, and strive to create attractive and unique spaces, may I take a minute to remind everyone that..... when you are searching (and we always are) for that perfect piece to put on that stand in the corner beside that wonderful chair that we just bought.....that you always consider an antique or vintage collectible first? For several reasons, you will be making a very sensible choice as well as a unique choice.
First of all, when you choose something that has been used by someone else before you, you are in affect recycling what is already on the planet.
Second...by choosing an antique or vintage collectible over a new department store accessory, you are building a 'portfolio of sorts' of pieces that will probably hold their value and may even earn you a profit at some point, if you decide to sell.
And third...you are letting your creative juices go to work when you can see the beauty in an object that has been used, loved, worn and treasured enough to survive to the present day.
You just can't manufacture the quality and beauty of time that comes with an antique. So let me take this opportunity, as one fellow decorating enthusiast to another, to encourage you to drive past the new glitzy department stores and find that quaint little antique shop, where many times for the same amount of money, or even less, you can purchase something that won't be worth 25% of what you just paid for it, once you've walked out the door. If I can borrow a phrase from Martha Stewart, decorating with antiques and collectibles "is a good thing." Happy Decorating everyone.
